Which setup guide should I read first?
For a new printer, start with the new printer setup checklist. Connect it to Wi-Fi or USB, then follow the steps for your computer or phone.
What do I need before I start?
The exact model number, your Wi-Fi network name and password (for a wireless setup), and the computer or phone you want to print from. Paper and installed ink or toner let you finish with a test page.
Should I use Wi-Fi or USB?
Wi-Fi lets several devices, including phones, share one printer. USB is simpler and works well when only one computer prints. Many printers support both.

Why can’t my computer find the printer?
Most often the printer and computer are on different networks, such as a guest network or a VPN. Print a network configuration report and compare the network name. The printer not found checklist covers every step.
My printer joined Wi-Fi but still says offline. What now?
Its IP address may have changed, or your device may be using an old copy of the printer. Clear stuck jobs, remove the printer from your device and add it again. See the printer offline checklist.
Does my printer work with 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Many home printers only use 2.4 GHz. Most routers broadcast both bands, so the printer can use 2.4 GHz while your laptop uses 5 GHz on the same network. Check your manual to be sure.
What is Wi-Fi Direct?
A direct wireless link between a phone or computer and the printer, without your router. It is useful when there is no home network, but your device leaves the internet while connected to it.
Software and drivers
Do I need to download a driver?
Often not. Windows, macOS (AirPrint) and Android (Mopria) support many printers without extra software. If you need it, get it from the manufacturer’s official website. Read our guide to finding software safely.
Is it safe to download drivers from other websites?
Use the manufacturer’s own support site. Third-party “driver” sites can bundle unwanted software, and official drivers are always free. Our official resources page links to them.
Can I print from my iPhone or Android phone?
Yes. iPhone and iPad use AirPrint, and Android uses its Default Print Service or the Mopria plugin. The phone and printer must be on the same Wi-Fi network. See steps for each device.
